George Sinovich launched The Codfather way back in 1992, and this upmarket establishment continues to thrive decades later. While the restaurant has evolved over the years with modern décor and updated menus, its commitment to quality seafood and a unique dining experience has remained unchanged. The Codfather is not a restaurant stuck in a time warp—it’s a testament to innovation in the seafood industry.
The Man Behind The Codfather: George Sinovich

With over 35 years of experience in the fish business, George Sinovich has built a reputation as a seafood connoisseur. At the heart of every Codfather restaurant is its signature fish counter, where customers can personally select their seafood, ensuring a fresh and tailored dining experience.
“My father had a small coal transporting company in Pretoria, which I joined. As a side-line, I started transporting fish and later opened a fish wholesale business,” George recalls. “I would sell a Tinker fish for R5 and offer to cook it for an extra 50c.”
His journey from transporting fish to building an iconic seafood restaurant showcases his entrepreneurial vision and dedication to offering top-quality seafood to South Africans.
The Codfather Experience
The Codfather is more than just a restaurant—it’s an experience. The concept of selecting fresh fish and having it prepared to order has become its hallmark. With a strong focus on quality, freshness, and sustainability, The Codfather has remained a favorite among seafood lovers.

Advice to Aspiring Entrepreneurs
As a seasoned entrepreneur, George has had his fair share of ups and downs. He shares valuable advice for those looking to start their own ventures:
“I have made many good decisions but have also faced failures. I’ve gone from riches to rags and back again, but I’ve never been afraid to take a chance. More than half of the crazy risks have paid off. I would advise any young entrepreneur to take that leap of faith—the rewards are there. Most importantly, always get up again after a failure. Passion and hard work always win.”
