Discover Rali Mampeule's success story, a journey from selling boerewors to transforming SA's real estate and affordable housing sectors.

His story is not just about personal success but also about creating opportunities for others and addressing some of the country’s most pressing challenges, such as affordable housing and access to healthcare.

From Street Hawker to Real Estate Mogul

Rali Mampeule’s journey began in Modjadji, Limpopo, where he grew up in modest circumstances. While studying for a BCom degree through Unisa, he sold boerewors rolls to make ends meet. His life took a pivotal turn when he met Paul Everitt, son of Charles Everitt, founder of the Chas Everitt International Property Group. Recognizing Mampeule’s drive and ambition, the Everitts offered him a job as an assistant real estate agent.

This opportunity marked the beginning of Mampeule’s ascent in the real estate industry. By the age of 22, he had already purchased R26 million worth of property development in Midrand—without any formal funding. Instead, he relied on bootstrapping, leveraging relationships with friends and family who became his angel investors. “Those were good times when with one salary you could buy four units,” he recalls.

Bootstrapping and Building a Legacy

Mampeule’s early success was fueled by his ability to act quickly and decisively. “Cash flow is the biggest challenge for any start-up company,” he says. “Getting financial backing is difficult without a track record, and that’s a challenge many in South Africa face today.” His solution? Bootstrapping. By reinvesting profits and maintaining tight financial discipline, Mampeule built a thriving real estate business.

At just 24, he opened his own estate agency, employing nearly 40 agents. His entrepreneurial spirit didn’t stop there. In 2005, he founded the Rali Mampeule Learnership Foundation, aimed at bringing “new blood into the old veins of real estate.” The foundation provides training and mentorship to aspiring real estate professionals, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Transforming Affordable Housing in South Africa

One of Mampeule’s most significant contributions to South Africa is his work in affordable housing. In July 2019, he founded the South African Housing and Infrastructure Fund (SAHIF), a R15.3 billion initiative aimed at addressing the country’s housing crisis. SAHIF acquires vacant and unused land near urban centers, converting it into zoned and serviced stands for affordable housing.

“There is a shortfall of two million proper housing units in South Africa,” Mampeule explains. “SAHIF is attending to this crisis by providing fully serviced stands, management expertise, and a proven track record to achieve our pipeline target within three years.” The fund aims to yield over 100,000 stands, impacting more than 430,000 lives and creating nearly 7,000 jobs.

Mampeule’s vision extends beyond just building houses. He emphasizes the importance of sustainability and quality. “I would like to see houses of good quality being built that are also sustainable,” he says. This focus on long-term solutions is critical in a country where the population growth rate continues to outpace housing development.

Global Impact: The Global Surgery Foundation

Mampeule’s commitment to giving back is evident in his support for the Global Surgery Foundation (GSF). As a founding donor, he has contributed significantly to ensuring safe and affordable surgical care for underserved communities worldwide. His motivation is deeply personal. “One of my sisters passed away giving birth a few years ago,” he shares. “Surgical procedures kill more people than TB and malaria combined.”

The statistics are staggering:

  • 5 billion people lack access to essential surgical care.
  • 90% of the world’s poor cannot access safe and affordable surgery.
  • Surgically treatable diseases account for 30% of global health issues.

Through the Rali & Makentse Mampeule Foundation, Mampeule continues to champion this cause, ensuring that no one is left behind due to a lack of access to life-saving surgical procedures.

Accolades and Recognition

Mampeule’s contributions have not gone unnoticed. He is the first African to be selected for the Forbes Real Estate Council, an invitation-only community of top executives in the industry. His accolades include the Nedbank Property Professional of the Year award and the Socio-Economic Impact Award from the South African Institute of Black Property Practitioners.

In addition to his professional achievements, Mampeule is a lifelong learner. He recently completed an Advanced Management Development Program in Real Estate at Harvard University, further equipping himself to tackle the challenges of the industry.

A Legacy of Empowerment and Transformation

Rali Mampeule’s success story is more than just a tale of personal achievement. It’s a blueprint for how one individual can create lasting change. Through his businesses, foundations, and philanthropic efforts, he has transformed the real estate industry, empowered countless individuals, and addressed critical social issues.

As he looks to the future, Mampeule remains committed to his mission. “I want to leave a legacy that inspires others to dream big and work hard,” he says. “Success is not just about what you achieve for yourself but what you do for others.”
