How Siwela Masoga Made Her First Million Selling Wine

Siwela Masoga is one of South Africa’s leading black female winemakers. She is the founder and CEO of Siwela Wines, a brand she established in 2018.

Siwela Masoga, founder of Siwela Wines, shares her journey from biotech graduate to winemaker, revealing how she built her wine empire.

Born in Marulaneng, Ga-Mphahlele, Limpopo, Masoga did not come from an entrepreneurial background. Raised by a single mother who was an educator, she grew up in a household where education was considered essential and non-negotiable.

From Science to Winemaking

Masoga’s journey into winemaking began after she earned a Diploma in Biotechnology, majoring in Fermentation and Microbiology, from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. She then secured an internship at Waterstone Wines in Stellenbosch, where she gained hands-on experience in cellar processing, vineyard management, packaging, and bottling.

Building Siwela Wines

Siwela Wines started with a modest production of just 100 bottles of a single variety, but Masoga had a vision of growing the brand into a leading name in South African wines. Through persistence, innovation, and a deep understanding of the winemaking process, she gradually expanded her offerings. Today, Siwela Wines produces nine different varieties, including red, white, and rosé wines, catering to a diverse market.

Each wine is carefully crafted using locally sourced grapes, ensuring high-quality flavors that reflect South Africa’s rich wine heritage. The brand has gained recognition not only for its premium taste but also for its commitment to empowering black entrepreneurs in an industry historically dominated by a few. Now, Siwela Wines produces over 8,000 bottles per variety, supplying both local and international markets.
