Sihle’s Brew is more than just a coffee brand—it’s a testament to resilience, innovation, and the power of partnerships. Founded by Sihle Magubane, a gardener-turned-entrepreneur, this South African Black-owned coffee brand has grown from humble beginnings to become a household name. But how did Sihle’s Brew become successful? The answer lies in a combination of passion, perseverance, and strategic decisions that transformed a small operation into a thriving business.

The Humble Beginnings of Sihle’s Brew

Sihle Magubane’s journey began in the rural town of iNkandla, KwaZulu-Natal. At just 16 years old, he became the sole provider for his siblings after the passing of his mother. Juggling two part-time jobs—gardening and pizza-making—while completing high school, Sihle’s early life was marked by hardship. But his determination to create a better future never wavered.

In 2003, Sihle’s life took a pivotal turn when he was offered a chance to train at the Ciro Coffee Academy. Under the mentorship of coffee connoisseur Roberto Monterrage, he honed his skills as a barista and developed a deep love for coffee. Over the next decade, Sihle worked tirelessly to improve sales for his clients, all while dreaming of one day launching his own brand.

In 2012, that dream became a reality. Sihle’s Brew was born, starting as a small operation in North Riding, Randburg. With high-quality Ethiopian beans and a commitment to crafting unique blends, Sihle roasted every batch himself, creating five distinct flavors tailored to the South African palate.

Overcoming Challenges: The Road to Growth

The early days of Sihle’s Brew were far from easy. Without access to significant funding, Sihle relied on reinvesting profits from each sale to grow his business. His first client, a local coffee shop, purchased just 6kg of coffee per month. But Sihle saw every order as an opportunity.

One of the most defining moments in his journey came when his car was written off, leaving him unable to deliver orders. Undeterred, Sihle took three taxis to deliver a single box of coffee. “It took me the whole day, and the customer never knew what it took to deliver that order,” he recalls. This level of dedication became the foundation of his success.

By 2014, Sihle’s Brew was generating R500,000 in annual turnover. However, Sihle faced challenges in scaling the business. A lack of financial literacy led to cash flow issues, and he even encountered problems with SARS. Recognizing the need for change, Sihle enrolled in a supplier development program at GIBS (Gordon Institute of Business Science).

The program was a turning point. Sihle learned critical skills in financial management, costing, and business strategy. Armed with this knowledge, he revamped his business model, secured funding, and invested in new equipment, including his first coffee roaster in 2018.

Breaking into Retail: The Pick n Pay Partnership

For five years, Sihle knocked on the doors of major retailers, facing rejection after rejection. Despite securing listings in some Spar and Food Lover’s Market stores, sales remained low. But Sihle’s persistence paid off when he connected with Pick n Pay’s Enterprise & Supplier Development program.

In August 2021, Sihle’s Brew was listed in 50 Pick n Pay stores. The initial response was overwhelming—29 units sold in just 15 days, with sales tripling the following month. Today, Sihle’s Brew products are available in over 350 Pick n Pay stores nationwide.

The partnership with Pick n Pay didn’t stop there. Sihle collaborated with the retailer to develop a unique line of ground coffee under the PnP brand, featuring flavors like Caramel Fudge, Vanilla, and Hazelnut. This plant-based, GMO-free blend has been a hit with consumers, further solidifying Sihle’s Brew as a trusted name in the coffee industry.

“Sihle has taken the listing opportunity and used the platform to realize his own dreams,” says Mishinga Seyuba Kombo, head of Pick n Pay’s Enterprise & Supplier Development. “His patience, positive attitude, and commitment to quality have been key to his success.”

Beyond Coffee: Expanding the Sihle’s Brew Legacy

Sihle’s Brew is more than just a coffee brand—it’s a multifaceted business that includes barista training, event solutions, and roasting services. Sihle also operates two coffee shops, Sihle’s Brew Barista Love, in Woodmead and Northview, Johannesburg.

Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced the closure of two branches, Sihle remains committed to growth. His dream is to own a factory dedicated to Sihle’s Brew and expand his product range with new flavors.

Equally important to Sihle is giving back to the community. To date, he has trained over 20 baristas, many of whom have gone on to build successful careers in the coffee industry. “If anyone is given a chance to obtain training or skills, they will excel in their job,” Sihle says. “I want to equip others with the same opportunities I was given.”
