While working at SuperKurl, Mashaba noticed the untapped potential of Johan Kriel, a white Afrikaner chemist who was undervalued by the company. Despite the racial tensions of apartheid South Africa, Mashaba approached Kriel with a revolutionary idea: to start their own hair care business.

In 1985, with a R30,000 loan from a friend, Mashaba, Kriel, and Joseph Molwanta launched Black Like Me. The brand quickly gained traction, offering high-quality hair care products tailored to Black consumers. Within seven months, the loan was repaid, and the business was thriving. Mashaba’s ability to identify a gap in the market and build a brand that resonated with its audience was nothing short of remarkable.
