Edendale Mall Now Fully Operational After 2021 Riots

Edendale Mall in Plessislaer, KZN, is serving its community once again after severely being damaged during the riots that took place in July 2021.

Owned by Exemplar REITail, the Edendale mall has recently welcomed back an extensive tenant mix that caters to the fashion conscience, and experience seeking consumer.

According to the company, the mall was rebuilt in phases in order to ensure that the community had access to convenient retail stores as soon as possible, the first phase was reopened in August 2022.

Phase 1 was opened in August 2022 with focus on healthcare, food and banking while Phase 2 was launched in November 2022, which saw the reopening of an additional grocery anchor and the food court.

The third and final phase of the mall now finally brings Exemplar’s July unrest rebuild plans to a close.

During the July unrest, many of Exemplar’s assets across Gauteng and KZN were severely affected.

“The team took the opportunity to recreate the Edendale Mall we had always envisioned…

Inspired by the community that we had grown with from the original opening in 2011, we relooked at our tenant mix, consolidated our GLA and designed a more compact but no less impressive centre of 30 000sqm.”

Jason McCormick, CEO of Exemplar

Key tenants in the mall include Boxer, Shoprite, Clicks, Woolworths, McDonald’s, Nedbank, Absa, Capitec, Standard Bank, FNB, as well as OMF. Fashion tenants include Mr Price, Markham, Truworths, and Totalsports amongst others.

“Now we rise to the challenge of our upcoming pipeline of developments. Our next ten projects span 246,000 sqm of retail space, serving 1,705 million people in the most under-serviced regions of the country.

With Tshakhuma Mall opening in September, we are also focusing on our Dan City, Capital Mall, Leratong City, Vuwani Mall and Idutywa Mall developments. It is great to focus all of our energy on new builds again,”
