Boxer: A Story of Growth, Innovation, and Community Connection

Since opening its doors in the late ’70s in Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal, Boxer has become one of Southern Africa’s fastest-growing discount retailers. From its early days as a humble cash-and-carry operation, it has transformed into a fully-fledged retail powerhouse.

Today, with over 500 stores across South Africa and Eswatini, Boxer has cemented itself as “Africa’s Favourite Discount Supermarket,” catering to middle and lower-income customers by offering low prices without compromising on quality.

This journey has been shaped by Boxer’s people-centered mission, innovation, and commitment to uplifting the communities it serves.

From Cash & Carry to Retail Powerhouse

Boxer’s journey began in 1977 as KwaZulu Cash & Carry, offering essential goods like maize meal, rice, and oil. By the late ‘70s, the company shifted gears, moving from wholesale to full-scale retail, a transition that allowed it to serve individual shoppers while still appealing to the informal market and bulk consumers.

The business grew quickly, opening its second store in 1979 and expanding beyond Empangeni over the next decade.

In 1988, a group of investors took over Boxer, giving it the resources and strategic direction it needed to broaden its reach. The company rebranded as Boxer Cash & Carry in 1991 and launched its first stores outside KwaZulu-Natal in the Eastern Cape.

Expansion soon followed into Mpumalanga and, later, every province in South Africa, firmly establishing Boxer as a national brand.

Partnering with Pick n Pay: A New Era

Boxer’s growth took another leap in 2002, when retail giant Pick n Pay acquired the company. This partnership provided Boxer with invaluable support while allowing it to operate independently, retaining its unique brand identity and community-focused mission.

Over the years, Boxer expanded its offerings, from liquor stores to hardware outlets like Boxer Build, serving the diverse needs of South African consumers.

Boxer’s commitment to accessible, affordable shopping has set it apart in the retail landscape. For instance, it opened its own meat processing plant in 2012, ensuring consistent, quality protein at prices its customers can afford.

This ability to evolve with customers’ needs has fueled Boxer’s ongoing success, making it an integral part of the South African shopping experience.

Reaching New Heights with Innovation

Boxer’s growth has been marked by continuous innovation. Under the guidance of leaders like Eugene Stoop, who joined Boxer in 1991 and became managing director, Boxer developed into a modern retail force.

Stoop oversaw major initiatives, such as creating Boxer’s own merchandise management system, BoMM, and introducing new store formats tailored to local needs. This approach helped Boxer scale rapidly and efficiently, even as it opened stores in rural areas far from its headquarters.

Boxer’s success goes beyond price; it’s also about community engagement. Staff members live within the areas they serve, creating a strong bond with local communities. Employees often begin in entry-level positions and work their way up, supported by training programs that make career growth a tangible goal.

Boxer is even a leader in hiring unemployed graduates, training them to understand every part of the retail business.

Looking Ahead: Boxer’s Future

In 2024, Pick n Pay announced plans to list Boxer on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, aiming to raise as much as R8 billion. This move highlights Boxer’s strength and independence within the Pick n Pay Group, and the listing is expected to propel Boxer’s growth even further, adding more stores and expanding its reach across the region.

As Boxer celebrates opening its 500th store, it remains as committed as ever to its founding principles. From offering low prices and quality goods to providing career-building opportunities for its staff, Boxer embodies the spirit of “Africa’s Favourite Discount Supermarket.”

This brand isn’t just about sales; it’s about people, progress, and making a meaningful impact in every community it serves.
