Lovuthando Dolls: Success Story By Yolanda Yawa-Donkers

Growing up in Gugulethu, Yolanda Yawa-Donkers, founder of Lovuthando Dolls, always felt a disconnect when it came to playing with dolls. The fair-skinned, blonde-haired dolls commonly found in toy stores did not resemble her or the children around her.

Struggling to relate to them, she found herself searching for alternatives—something that reflected her identity and culture. This curiosity led her to flea markets, where she scoured for second-hand dolls she could experiment on, hoping to create something more representative.

“I tried to re-color a Barbie doll brown, but I didn’t like the result,” she recalls. The experience, however, planted a seed in her mind—one that would later grow into a powerful business idea.

Determined to create dolls that black children could see themselves in, she founded Luvuthando Dolls in January 2018. The goal was simple yet profound: to provide children with toys that celebrated their heritage, skin tones, and natural hair textures. She wanted young boys and girls to embrace their uniqueness and build confidence in who they are.

“I felt there wasn’t enough representation for the black child to be able to embrace who they are and see how unique and special they are,” she explains.

Luvuthando Dolls is more than just a toy brand—it is a movement that promotes diversity and self-love from a young age. By offering dolls that authentically represent African beauty, Yolanda is helping to reshape the narrative around inclusivity in the toy industry.
